The SR-22 form, or “bond,” is a piece of documentation that is often required if a person has been involved in multiple at-fault automobile accidents or been convicted of one or more instances of drunk/intoxicated driving. Simply put, the SR-22 indicates that they are a high-risk driver, and it can be a required part of their driving record for as long as the judge deems it necessary.
So, what happens if you simply don’t get an SR-22? Nothing good, as it turns out.
Why You Can’t Ignore Your SR-22 Obligations
In nearly all cases, if a person has been ordered to get an SR-22 bond, their driver’s license has been suspended as part of their punishment. Getting an SR-22 is a requirement for being allowed to get their license reinstated.
If someone wants to drive again, they simply must get the SR-22.
Driving without a valid license is a serious crime and can incur steep penalties or even prison time. If someone refused to get an SR-22 and follow the ordered processes for reinstating their license, they could be in deep trouble. They might even end up in a situation where they aren’t allowed to drive again, or at least not for many years.
In addition, someone in this situation – without a license or an SR-22 – is completely ineligible for vehicle insurance of any type. So, if they were to get into an accident while driving on a suspended license, they would personally be liable for any and all damages caused by the accident. The costs could be ruinous and send anyone into bankruptcy.
In short, trying to drive without a required SR-22 is a very bad idea that can potentially ruin a person’s life.
In addition, if a person merely delays getting their SR-22 past the point they were ordered to get it, that too can cause penalties. Late fees, or charges for reinstating a license that has expired, can run hundreds of dollars. This is affordable for many people, but why waste money?
Even if you aren’t planning on driving immediately after the license suspension, you absolutely should get your SR-22 as ordered, to prevent any further problems.
