Get Your Driver’s License Back Using Ohio’s New BMV Program!
To all those who lost their driver’s licenses in the state of Ohio due to activities other than substance abuse, weapon possession, or any such substantial criminal charge, there may be a chance for you to redeem yourself!
SR-22 Bond of Ohio explains how you can take advantage of the new BMV Program to earn back your license.
The Reinstatement Fee Amnesty Initiative
The Reinstatement Fee Amnesty Initiative is a six-month program that allows people with suspended licenses in the state of Ohio to have a chance to get their reinstatement fees reduced or even waived! They can do so by petitioning the BMV.
This new program seeks to benefit those people who lost their licenses to petty mistakes and cannot afford to get them back due to the high fees of reinstatement.
Eligibility
The BMV program is a relief for those looking to get their licenses back and start driving again. However, the opportunity is not available for all suspended drivers. Only the people that were charged with certain offenses can apply to be a part of the program and get reinstatement relief. Some common offenses on the list include rash driving, non-compliance, and not stopping after an accident.
Further, to be eligible, the person applying should have been suspended for a minimum of 18 months, without any compliance failure with respect to the court-ordered sanctions related to the offense. The sanctions may include but are not limited to submission of fines and court charges, community service, drug, or alcohol assessments, etc.
How Does It Work?
If and only if an individual meets all criteria on the eligibility list, he or she can apply for this program. Here is how the program would work in different cases:
- Individual owes 1 reinstatement fee: In the case only one reinstatement fee is owed by the eligible applicant, he or she will be allowed to pay half of the amount due to the BMV. Their license will be reinstated after the amount is paid.
- Individual owes more than 1 reinstatement fee: If the eligible applicant owes multiple reinstatement fees, they will be allowed to pay either the lowest of those fees or ten percent of the sum total of all due fees, whichever is greater. Once they have paid the amount they owe, their license will be reinstated in the state of Ohio.
